Prototypes & Studies is an exploration of ideas in motion. A view into the artist’s mind and the creative process that exists before a work becomes fully realized.
The exhibition brings together experiments, studies, and conceptual works created through a process of testing, learning, and discovery. These works explore what happens when an idea is given permission to evolve, with no expectation of perfection.
Each piece functions as a prototype - a visual question, a possibility. Some studies may lead directly toward future work. Others exist simply as evidence of experimentation and creative curiosity. Together, they reveal the importance of process.
At the heart of Prototypes & Studies is the idea that finished work does not exist in isolation. Every experiment informs something else. A color discovered in a study may reappear in a larger work. A technique practiced may become fundamental to another body of work. An unfinished composition may inspire an entirely new direction.
The exhibition offers an opportunity to step behind the finished image and into the space where ideas are formed. It celebrates curiosity, trial and error, repetition, learning, and the freedom to explore without knowing exactly where an idea will lead.
Matthew Trujillo is an artist known for his bold pop-art portraiture. He draws inspiration from fashion, music, architecture, and contemporary design, blending sharp, graphic facial expressions with bold visual language, resulting in striking compositions that merge modern pop art with a raw street aesthetic.
Successfully experimenting with the different light tones that bring more intensity and depth to his painting, Trujillo creates mesmerizing art that sparks the imagination of the viewer and invites them to create their own story. Trujillo’s bold graphic style and signature brushstroke, symbolism that reminds the artist of his home in Las Cruces, New Mexico, and represents finding light amongst hardship.
